It operates on the 2.4 GHz band, broadcasts on two wireless channels across 40 frequencies to fight data packet loss during potential wireless interference and is also built for long battery life (more on that below).ĭue to my setup, I did suffer interference issues with the Rival 3 Wireless and its Quantum 2.0 dongle at first. But for gaming, you’re encouraged to use the dongle.īecause seemingly every gaming brand has its own wireless tech these days, the dongle uses SteelSeries’ Quantum 2.0 Wireless technology. The Rival 3 Wireless offers your choice of connecting via Bluetooth 5.0, which should give you longer battery life and save you a USB port, or via a USB Type-A dongle. The two side buttons were positioned in a way that felt just right in my hand, so even if there will be some natural variance between users, I’m comfortable saying their placement is fine. SteelSeries used mechanical switches for the left and right buttons, but they felt pretty typical. Nothing else about the Rival 3 Wireless truly stood out.The mouse neither astounds nor confounds it simply meets my expectations for a modern gaming mouse. ![]() I appreciated the lack of a cable that can get caught on my desk - or pounced upon by my cat - which automatically gives the Rival 3 Wireless an advantage over the Rival 3. This is a modern gaming mouse with modern gaming performance. I didn’t have any sensor-related problems flicking on to heads in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, cutting down guards in the demo for Ghostrunner or absently clicking my way through Divinity: Original Sin 2. The sensor can handle up to 40g of acceleration. The new sensor has a CPI range from 100 to 18,000 that feels like every other modern sensor, as well as a max velocity of up to over 400 IPS if you’re using one of SteelSeries’ best RGB mouse pads and 400 IPS otherwise. It debuts the SteelSeries’ TrueMove Air optical sensor, an upgrade over the wired version’s 8,500-CPI TrueMove Core. That said, the Rival 3 Wireless mostly performed as expected. I’ve started to adapt, and this won’t be a negative for people who have yet to hop on the ultra-lightweight bandwagon. I’ve grown so accustomed to using an ultra-lightweight mouse (the wired rat is only 2.22 ounces) that using a ‘normal’ mouse feels strange. I’ll be upfront: I would probably like the Rival 3 Wireless a lot more if I hadn’t started using the HK Gaming Mira-M a few months ago. The Rival 3 Wireless only features lighting on the scroll wheel, however, likely helping to keep cost and weight down. The Rival 3 had RGB backlighting along the bottom of its case and via the SteelSeries logo but not on the scroll wheel. Of course, this wouldn’t be a mass-market gaming mouse without some form of RGB backlighting, but the approach here is a bit different. But in daily use, these issues weren’t distracting. On the other hand, there is some wobble on the primary mouse buttons, as well as a bit of pre-travel. The scroll wheel texturing is typical SteelSeries, the matte coating is grippy without being too rough and the buttons all feel satisfying to press. Other aspects of the mouse feel mighty familiar. Luckily, that added weight also makes the Rival 3 Wireless feel a bit sturdier than its predecessor. ![]() Lighter wireless mice, such as the Logitech G Pro Wireless (2.82 ounces) and Razer Viper Ultimate (2.56 ounces) cost significantly more than the Rival 3 Wireless. The Rival 3 Wireless finds itself in good company at this weight: it’s similar to the Logitech G305 Lightspeed for example, as well as the Corsair Harpoon RGB Wireless (3.49 ounces each). Some weight gain is to be expected when making a wired mouse wireless, however, because of the additional hardware requirements. ![]() ![]() ![]() These findings do not mean that you can' t store auditory or visual information. People rapidly lose the memory of the precise images that make up a picture story (e.g., whether a character faced left or right), but they retain the meaning or gist of the story (Gernsbacher, 1985). ![]() The same phenomenon is observed with purely visual stimuli. People who listen to a story will later confidently "recognize" sentences that never appeared in the story-so long as these new sentences are consistent with the story's meaning (Bransford and Franks, 1971). How did cognitive scientists figure this out? An important clue that memories are stored by their meaning is the types of errors people make on memory tests. The initial experience by which you learned this fact may have been visual (watching a flame go out under a glass) or auditory (hearing an explanation), but the resulting representation of that knowledge in your mind is neither visual nor auditory. For example, your knowledge that a fire requires oxygen to burn is unlikely to be stored as a visual or an auditory memory. You typically store memories in terms of meaning-not in terms of whether you saw, heard, or physically interacted with the information. An important finding from that research is that memory is usually stored independent of any modality. Some memories are stored as visual and auditory representations-but most memories are stored in terms of meaning.Ĭognitive psychologists have used formal laboratory tasks to investigate the role of modality in memory. But is the theory correct? And, whether or not the theory is correct, might it not also be true that all of the kindergartners would learn the most about holidays by listening to stories, looking at pictures, and handling costumes?īefore we tackle the research on using modalities to enhance student learning, let's review a few things that cognitive scientists know about modalities.ġ. For example, within one kindergarten class, the auditory learner could listen to stories about different holidays around the world, while the visual learner examined pictures of holiday celebrants, and the kinesthetic learner handled costumes and artifacts associated with the holidays. The theory that students learn more when content is presented in their best modality seems to make sense, seems to be supported by classroom experiences, and offers the hope of maximizing each child's learning by planning different lessons for each type of learner. I will also address why the idea of tailoring instruction to a student' s best modality is so enduring-despite substantial evidence that it is wrong.ĭiscussions of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners * are common in educational literature, teacher-preparation programs, and professional development workshops. In this column, I will describe some of the research on matching modality strength to the modality of instruction. All students learn more when content drives the choice of modality. What does matter is whether the child is taught in the content' s best modality. What cognitive science has taught us is that children do differ in their abilities with different modalities, but teaching the child in his best modality doesn' t affect his educational achievement. And the idea that these differences might prove useful in the classroom has been around for at least 40 years. The idea that people may differ in their ability to learn new material depending on its modality-that is, whether the child hears it, sees it, or touches it-has been tested for over 100 years. Question: What does cognitive science tell us about the existence of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners and the best way to teach them? ![]() Here are two triangles, side by side and oriented in the same way. The Side-Angle-Side (SAS) theorem states if two sides of one triangle are proportional to two corresponding sides of another triangle, and their corresponding included angles are congruent, the two triangles are similar. The second theorem requires an exact order: a side, then the included angle, then the next side. Then you can compare any two corresponding angles for congruence. By subtracting each triangle's measured, identified angles from 180°, you can learn the measure of the missing angle. You may have to rotate one triangle to see if you can find two pairs of corresponding angles.Īnother challenge: two angles are measured and identified on one triangle, but two different angles are measured and identified on the other one.īecause each triangle has only three interior angles, one each of the identified angles has to be congruent. Sometimes the triangles are not oriented in the same way when you look at them. Watch for trickery from textbooks, online challenges, and mathematics teachers. Triangle Similarity - AA Theorem (Angle Angle) Tricks of the trade Since ∠A is congruent to ∠U, and ∠M is congruent to ∠T, we now have two pairs of congruent angles, so the AA Theorem says the two triangles are similar. ![]() Notice ∠M is congruent to ∠T because they each have two little slash marks. We have already marked two of each triangle's interior angles with the geometer's shorthand for congruence: the little slash marks.Ī single slash for interior ∠A and the same single slash for interior ∠U mean they are congruent. Here are two scalene triangles △JAM and △OUT. For AA, all you have to do is compare two pairs of corresponding angles. The two triangles could go on to be more than similar they could be identical. Triangle similarity theorems Triangle Similarity Theorems Angle-Angle (AA) theoremĪngle-Angle (AA) says that two triangles are similar if they have two pairs of corresponding angles that are congruent. If they both were equilateral triangles but side EN was twice as long as side HE, they would be similar triangles. They are the same size, so they are identical triangles. The two equilateral triangles are the same except for their letters. Side FO is congruent to side HE side OX is congruent to side EN, and ∠O and ∠E are the included, congruent angles. Both ∠O and ∠E are included angles between sides FO and OX on △FOX, and sides HE and EN on △HEN. Notice that ∠O on △FOX corresponds to ∠E on △HEN. To make your life easy, we made them both equilateral triangles. You cannot compare two sides of two triangles and then leap over to an angle that is not between those two sides. The included angle refers to the angle between two pairs of corresponding sides. If the ratios are congruent, the corresponding sides are similar to each other. You can establish ratios to compare the lengths of the two triangles' sides. Their comparative sides are proportional to one another their corresponding angles are identical. Triangles are easy to evaluate for proportional changes that keep them similar. Similar Triangles Corresponding Angles Proportion You look at one angle of one triangle and compare it to the same-position angle of the other triangle. ![]() The three theorems for similarity in triangles depend upon corresponding parts. ![]() Even if two triangles are oriented differently from each other, if you can rotate them to orient in the same way and see that their angles are alike, you can say those angles correspond. In geometry, correspondence means that a particular part on one polygon relates exactly to a similarly positioned part on another. These three theorems, known as Angle-Angle (AA), Side-Angle-Side (SAS), and Side-Side-Side (SSS), are foolproof methods for determining similarity in triangles. Similar triangles are easy to identify because you can apply three theorems specific to triangles. An equilateral triangle with sides 21 cm and a square with sides 14 cm would not be similar because they are different shapes. ![]() You could have a square with sides 21 cm and a square with sides 14 cm they would be similar.
